Borough's Dedicated Volunteers Awarded

Dedicated volunteers from across the borough were recognised and praised for their invaluable contribution to the community.

The Mayor's Voluntary Awards 2011 ceremony took place at the Town Hall on Tuesday 18 October. Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Brian Stead, presented the award winners with framed certificates in recognition of their valued contribution to the community.

In total 22 awards were made including 17 awards to individual volunteers, one Young Volunteer Award and three Team Awards.

The top award for Outstanding Achievement was presented to Andrew Cole, who was nominated for his work with the Victim Support and Witness Service. Andrew has been an active volunteer with Victim Support since its local inauguration in 1983. During his service of nearly 29 years, Andrew has provided emotional and practical support to a huge number and range of victims across East Surrey.

The Mayor said: “It was a real honour to recognise the work of these dedicated volunteers.  They have undertaken commendable work that is very much appreciated by many people across a wide spectrum.”

"I would like to extend my thanks to not only those recognised in these awards but to all volunteers who make a difference throughout the borough. I also would like to thank those who nominated the award winners for taking the trouble to make their nomination."

The Mayor's Annual Volunteer Awards scheme was introduced in 2004 to recognise the contribution made by volunteers and to celebrate the role of the voluntary sector in serving the borough and its residents.

The annual awards scheme is organised by the Council in partnership with Reigate and Banstead Voluntary Service.

Des Shepherd, Manager of Reigate and Banstead Voluntary Service, said: “Volunteers give their time and energy to help make the borough a better place and they make a huge difference to people’s lives. Their work often goes unnoticed, so we are really pleased to work with the Council to recognise them.

“The winners reflect the wide range of voluntary activity and work that goes on in the area and I’d like to congratulate them for serving their communities.”
